Sigue sin nombre / Still without a name, 2020, acrylic and charcoal on paper, 70 x 100 cm
In November 2020 the Peruvian art agency BLOC Art launched a call to contribute to the “Archivo Artivista Peruano”. The initiative surged as a reaction to the controversial change of presidency in Peru during that month, performed without elections after the resignation of Martin Vizcarra, former president. The “Archivo Artivista Peruano” serves as a source of artistic testimonials to document this event historically. The work “Sigue sin nombre - Still without a name” was accepted as submission and is published with the artist commentary on the archive’s online presence. The work "Sigue sin nombre / Still without a name" was acdepted and published with the artist's commentary:
“The Peruvian volcano "Misti" (which in colonial times was also called "volcano without name") is shown stripped of its shell, revealing stratified structures of hardened lava and debris, painted in the national colours of Peru. This image is a representation of the nation in a state of confusion with one of its national symbols turned on its head - suspended where one would expect the sky, displaced and removed from earthly reality and order. The sky, a place of limitlessness and possibility, is absent. A vague fume made of water and magmatic particles floats underneath the volcano, left behind where Misti should reside. It's elements are without clear orientation and appear to fall into a state of immobility. The year of the last recorded eruption of Misti, 1985, was the first time in 40 years that a presidency was handed over democratically between two presidents of Peru. This process is currently disrupted, just like the depiction of the fuming life forces of Misti.
The title "Sigue sin nombre" / "Still without name" is a play to its colonial name and direct reference to the illegitimacy of a president coming into power by means other than a democratic process. The nation's representative continues to have no name.”
